ATAR English takes on Lord of the Flies

2 September 2024

After being invited to a Great Gatsby party with Ms Gordevich’s Literature class earlier this term, one Year 11 ATAR English class was determined to repay the favour. They achieved this through hosting a Lord of the Flies party, celebrating their recently studied class novel from author William Golding.

The party immersed both classes in the experiences the marooned boys endured on a deserted island, through a variety of activities. The highlight was the Spear the Pig competition, where the students showcased their survival skills (or lack thereof). While, unfortunately, a few students playing the roles of Simon and Piggy may not have lasted through the ordeal, the remaining survivors were left to determine who was the beast threatening them all. The ultimate realisation that the beast was within themselves all along was an appropriate way to finish.

I would like to commend the students from both classes for their commitment and enthusiasm towards the event. The acting skills of Taylor, Olivia and Lincoln warrant special mention. It is fantastic to see students in English engaging with their texts beyond just reading and analysis. We hope to see them carry this appreciation for the subject into their Year 12 studies, and we would love to see similar events in the future!

Student Experience

Last Friday one of our Year 11 English ATAR classes held an interactive class party for their studied novel, The Lord of The Flies by William Golding. The lesson included hands-on activities, such as an introduction that immersed their peers into the novel, pin the spear on the pig, some survival games, a guess-who ‘riddle’ that revealed the beast that lies within us all – and even more!

This lesson was planned and executed by the students in the class, showing a creative and thorough understanding of the overall novel.
