Athletes make their mark at State level

23 February 2021

A highlight of any day is receiving an email from a parent or anyone else letting us know about what our students, current or past, have accomplished outside of the College.

With numerous sporting events taking place during the summer, a number of our students have been making their mark in athletics at recent State events.

At the WA State Athletics Championships, Ashleigh Candy won a silver medal in three different events (U18 Women’s 3000m, U18 Women’s 1500m and U18 Women’s 800m) thus qualifying for all three events at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney. Her outstanding achievements was topped off with a gold-medal performance in the U20 Women’s 5000m event.

During that same Championship, Chris Wright won Gold in the 3000m along with Jack Silver and will be part of the State team for the Australian Athletics Championships. It’s not his first success of the year at a big event, having won two silver and two bronze medals at the Track Cycling State Championships which will see him be a part of the State team that will compete in Brisbane in April

In another outstanding effort, Alex Wright took out second place in the Heptathlon event at the WA State Combined Events Championships.

Alex and Chris have both been offered places in the Talent ID squads at WA Institute of Sport (WAIS) with Alex placed in both the Kayaking and Track Cycling squad while Chris is in the Track Cycling squad

Special mention must also go out to one of our staff member Mr James McCooey who participated and came in fourth in the 800m event at the WA State Championships.

Well done to these amazing athletes not just on these great achievements but also for your ongoing dedication to your training and continuous improvement. Your success is certainly well deserved and we look forward to more of your success in the future.
