Gaslight Performance

18 June 2024

Earlier this month our Year 11 and 12 Literature students attended a performance of Gaslight at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco. Drama forms a third of the Literature course, and attending a live production reinforces for the students that plays are meant to be performed, not read in a classroom.

Here is what some students had to say about the experience:

"Gaslight is a suspenseful psychological thriller that masterfully delves into the themes of manipulation and mental instability, bringing light to the term “gaslighting” that is commonly involved in modern day discussion around domestic violence, especially in contemporary Australia."

"I really enjoyed the use of lighting for atmosphere and during the dramatic scenes. The set was a gorgeous representation of Victorian era architecture which had an eerie feel about it and added a unique and haunting touch to every scene, knowing that the house had a history of criminal minds and greed."

"The lighting design was exceptional, evoking an eerie ambiance that felt like an authentic reproduction of the period's illumination, thereby immersing viewers in the era."

"Its impact is evident in its lasting influence on popular culture and its continued relevance in discussions about psychological manipulation and abuse. The play is a must-see for fans of psychological thrillers and remains a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of manipulation and control."

Thanks to the teachers who attended the performance with the students, and to the parents who organised their transport.

The opportunity to attend this performance reinforces our pedagogical principle of Engagement as students enhance their understanding of the intricacies of drama writing and production.
