Mock Trials in Year 7 HaSS

28 November 2024

This term in Humanities and Social Sciences, our Year 7 students have been diving into Civics and Citizenship, focusing on legal processes and how they function in our society.

As part of their studies, students explored the roles and responsibilities within the legal system, gaining an understanding of how laws are upheld, and disputes are resolved.

To bring their learning to life, several classes participated in mock trials during their lessons in Week 9. In these trials, students enthusiastically took on roles such as barristers, witnesses, magistrates, and justices, applying their knowledge of courtroom procedures and the justice system. The activity offered a hands-on experience, allowing students to explore how legal decisions are made and the importance of fairness and critical thinking in the process. Students experienced firsthand the complexities of legal decision-making.

“In the mock trial, I had such a fun time investigating as a lawyer and making arguments, it was so fun and satisfying to catch onto something that the defendant team and witnesses had done and then making an argument, it was honestly a fun experience that I feel so honoured to do.”  Valerie (Year 7)

These interactive sessions not only reinforced classroom learning but also encouraged critical thinking, teamwork, and public speaking. The mock trials provided an engaging and memorable way for students to deepen their understanding of our legal system while fostering skills that will serve them well into the future.
