Commencing Monday 2 September, our College community celebrated NAIDOC Week and encapsulated this year’s theme ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud.’
Students were engaged in a range of activities including going House-to-House in a fun 3v3 basketball tournament. Congratulations to Brigid House who claimed victory in the Grand Final game. A special shout out to Binar Futures and Fremantle Docker Michael (Sonny) Walters for coming out to support this activity and our NAIDOC Week celebrations.Â
In Humanities and Social Sciences, some of our Year 8 students had the wonderful opportunity to hear from the Farmer brothers Dennis and Tony and learn about their unique experiences as Indigenous soldiers. Thank you to Ms Farmer for organising this learning opportunity for our students and staff.Â
On Wednesday 4 September the whole College gathered with special guests to celebrate Indigenous culture. We were honoured to hear from alumni and Founding Director of Aboriginal Education Solutions Mikayla King.
Staff, students and Clem Jetta dazzled us with the didgeridoo and Binar gave us a special dance performance. It was a fantastic way to acknowledge and share cultural heritage and stories that enriches our school community. The Assembly concluded with a smoking ceremony followed by a morning tea in the Peter Elloy Staff Centre for invited families and guests to have a yarn and reflect on the morning together.Â
Thank you to Nan Roma, Justin Phillips and family, Clem Jetta, Binar Sports and mentors, Jayden Boundary and family, Mikala King, Lily Gogos and the CEWA, Aboriginal Team for joining us at Assembly and helping to make our NAIDOC Week celebrations so special.
