Dear families and friends,
Last week, the College celebrated Book Week, which is nostalgic for many parents, who recall the excitement (and sometimes the stress) of crafting costumes for their children’s favourite literary characters. But as our students grow older, the magic of Book Week evolves into something deeper—a celebration of the transformative power of reading and the limitless possibilities it offers.
This year’s Book Week theme, “Reading is Magic,” perfectly captures the enchantment that books bring into our lives. As an avid reader and educational leader, I believe that reading truly is a kind of magic. It’s the magic that opens doors to new worlds, sparks imagination, and empowers us with knowledge. Whether through the pages of a physical book or an e-reader’s screen, reading is a fundamental part of developing skills that last a lifetime. Books are more than just stories; they are gateways to knowledge and learning, offering insights into everything from science and history to art and philosophy. Through reading, students sharpen their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, learning to analyse ideas, question concepts, and make informed decisions. The magic of reading also fosters empathy and understanding. By stepping into the lives of different characters and exploring diverse perspectives, students deepen their emotional intelligence and build connections with others.
This love of reading often begins at home, with children snuggled on their parents’ knees, listening to stories that light up their imaginations. The magic starts in these early moments—parents play a crucial role in nurturing a lifelong love of reading, helping their children develop the curiosity and skills that will guide them through their academic journey and beyond. Even as students grow older, parents remain vital partners in their learning, encouraging them to explore new ideas, ask questions and dive into the magical world of books.
During Book Week, our school community celebrated these timeless benefits. One highlight was the ‘Write a Book In a Day Competition,’ an event that embodied the magic of storytelling. Students collaborated to create an original story, complete with illustrations, all within a single school day. The results were remarkable, but more important was the process—students experienced the magic of working together, sharing ideas, and bringing a story to life.
The magic of reading goes far beyond any single event. Books hold the power to shape who we are and who we can become. In an age where information is more accessible than ever, the ability to read critically and thoughtfully is a vital skill. Books help us navigate complex ideas, understand different cultures, and build the emotional intelligence to connect. They stimulate our minds, reduce stress, and preserve the cultural heritage that shapes our identities.
Through reading, we unlock the limitless potential of learning, shaping who we are today and who we aspire to be tomorrow!
