Principal’s Message

17 September 2024

Dear families and friends,

In preparing for this week’s final assembly to acknowledge the Class of 2024, I reflected on the words of American President, Theodore Roosevelt.  He reminded me that true greatness lies in boldly stepping into the arena of life. Roosevelt said, “It is not the critic who counts… the credit belongs to the one who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly… and who, at the worst, fails while daring greatly.”

For our school community, this quote is a reminder that what truly matters isn’t sitting back and critiquing others from the sidelines, but rather being the one who steps up to take action. Whether that means trying something new, pushing through challenges, or leading others, it’s the effort—the courage to try—that counts.

For all our students, there will be countless moments where they have the chance to step into the “arena”. That arena might look different for each of them, but the lesson is the same: don’t be afraid to try, to fail, and to try again. Student can dare greatly:

  • In the Classroom: They might be hesitant to ask a question or raise their hand in class, worried about what others will think. But daring greatly means taking that step, even if they are unsure. Asking for help or tackling a difficult topic shows that they are willing to learn and grow, no matter the outcome.
  • In their Leadership: Being a leader “in the arena” means stepping up to care for peers and finding ways to bring the school community together. Leadership isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being willing to take risks, learn from mistakes, and keep moving forward.
  • In Friendships and Social Life: Sometimes, the hardest arena to step into is one where we have to stand up for ourselves or others. Whether that means defending a friend, reaching out to someone who feels left out, or simply staying true to yourself, daring greatly means acting with kindness and courage, even when it’s uncomfortable.
  • In Personal Challenges: Whether you’re preparing for exams or a performance, training for a sport, or pursuing a personal goal, daring greatly means putting in the effort, knowing that you might stumble along the way. It’s in these moments of struggle that the most growth happens, and the greatest triumphs are won.

This year, our Student Leadership Team of 2024 have been incredible examples of daring greatly. They have been in the arena—taking on responsibility, organising events, and making a difference in our community. They didn’t shy away from the challenges that came their way, and because of that, they have left a lasting impact in our school community. Thank you to our Student Leaders and Mr Adam Thorne, Student Leadership Co-ordinator for their dedication and leadership.

To the newly elected Student Leaders of 2025, this is your opportunity to step into the arena. Leadership is never easy, but it’s also never about being perfect. It’s about showing up with enthusiasm, being willing to learn, and giving your best effort. There will be challenges ahead, but remember, the most important thing is to keep striving. Your courage and commitment will inspire others and continue to shape our school community in meaningful ways. We are excited to see the great things you will accomplish!

Roosevelt’s words serve as a powerful reminder to all of us: it’s not the critics or the mistakes that define us, but the willingness to step forward, take risks, and dare greatly. Whether in the classroom, on the field, in leadership, or in our everyday interactions, let’s all commit to stepping into the arena, striving with purpose, and supporting each other along the way.

The end of Term 3 is always a little bittersweet as we know that our Year 12 students as leaders of the College will begin their transition to the next path in their life journey.  Some students will return to the College to complete their examinations, others will embark on their career path or further training. I thank the Class of 2024 for their wonderful leadership and contributions to our College community over the last six years and look forward to celebrating their graduation from the College in Term 4. My prayer for them all is that they will forever know that they will always find support in their faith, their family, their friends and our Lasallian community.

I wish all members of our community a well-deserved and revitalising break and look forward to seeing everyone back for Term 4 on Tuesday 8 October 2024.

God bless!
