Dear Families and Friends,
Over the past few weeks, we have come together as a whole school community to celebrate significant events in the life of our school and the Church.
Commencing our Lenten Journey
Lent is not just about giving up chocolate or staying off social media—it’s about growth, reflection, and preparing for something greater. Pope Francis’ Lenten Message for 2025 challenges us to think about three key ideas: how we’re journeying in faith, how we support each other as a community, and how we find hope in Christ’s resurrection.
Where Are You on Your Journey?
Lent is a time to pause and ask: Am I moving forward in my faith, or just standing still? It’s easy to stay in our comfort zones, but real growth happens when we push ourselves. This might mean setting aside time to pray, choosing kindness even when it’s hard, or stepping up to help someone in need. Small choices can make a big difference.
We’re in This Together
Faith is not just personal—it’s something we live out in our community. Our Ash Wednesday liturgies, held in our House groups on 5 March 2025, reminded us that we’re not alone on this journey. We walk together, supporting each other, making sure no one is left out or struggling alone. Lent is a chance to strengthen these connections and be more intentional about how we treat those around us.
Holding On to Hope
Lent leads us to Easter, the ultimate reminder that hope is real and powerful. Pope Francis reminds us that hope does not disappoint (Rom 5:5) because Christ has already conquered sin and death. No matter what challenges we face—stress, self-doubt, setbacks—there’s always hope in something greater.
As we journey together through Lent in this Jubilee year, I hope that you will make time to grow, support others, and remember that Christ is our hope. Pope Francis’ Lenten Message can be found here.
Inter-House Swimming Carnival
Our community and House spirit were very evident on Friday, 14 March 2025, at the Inter-House Swimming Carnival. Our swimmers gave their best and produced remarkable results. Seeing our students compete and participate reminds me how grateful I am for their sportsmanship and for sharing their talents with the community. I am also grateful for the contributions of:
- Our Sports Captains, Natalie Chisi and Taylor Croft, for their work behind the scenes, along with the House Captains for their leadership in supporting their respective houses and House Coordinator.
- Our students cheering a fellow House member along, particularly as they tired towards the end of a race.
- The teamwork demonstrated in the novelty events.
- Students who stepped up to fill a place of an absent student to ensure House points weren’t lost.
- The wonderful staff for their preparation and work on the day, particularly Ms Alex Robinson, Sports Coordinator, and our Health and Physical Education Team.
Congratulations to Brigid House who secured the overall Swimming Shield ahead of runners-up La Salle House, who continue to show impressive improvement. Congratulations also to MacKillop House who was awarded the “Spirit Award” for best overall participation by a House on the day.
Flourishing Through Courage
Reflecting on the events of the past few weeks and everything else we do, a crucial element of success are our students’, parents’, and staff members’ courage to contribute, making events like our Inter-House Swimming Carnival special.
Reflecting on the work of our founder, St John Baptiste de La Salle, and the many brothers who followed in his footsteps across the decades, we see what can be achieved if we all have the courage to contribute. That is a flourishing global community that seeks to serve others and is inclusive of all.
Communities are built through the contribution of its people, and we want everyone in our College to have the ability and the courage to step forward and contribute in a genuinely positive way.
It can be challenging and daunting to commit to being involved, so often it is easy to sit back and watch everything pass you by. At La Salle College, we want to inspire our students, parents, and staff to not shy away from that challenge and live their lives fully.
We want students to take full advantage of the rich array of learning opportunities on offer at our College. We want them to be courageous, to step outside of their comfort zone, and to become fully involved and contribute. We want our students to capture this unique opportunity to help shape both themselves and our school, and in the spirit of St John Baptiste de La Salle, encourage others to do the same.
In the coming weeks, there are a number of events that will allow our students, parents, and staff the opportunity to demonstrate their courage through commitment. I hope that all within our community can consider how they may demonstrate their commitment.
God Bless!
Ms Giovanna Fiume
