People’s Choice voting is now open for CEWA’s 2025 QCE Awards.
The awards program recognises programs and initiatives in Catholic schools across Western Australia that support the vision of providing Christ-centred, student-focused engaged learning environments. This year, La Salle College has submitted two nominations in the Community category.
Culture, Canvas, Cloth – Connecting our Community
Inspired and led by student voice, ‘Culture, Canvas, Cloth – Connecting our Community’ is a collaborative project between staff, students and community.
The project started with a series of brainstorming sessions, where students explored what it means to be part of the Lasallian community and identified what makes their school unique. La Salle’s eight pastoral care house groups, Derbarl Yerrigan River, and Yarning Circle were highlighted as powerful symbols of identity and connection. The canvas artwork is a reflection of these elements and expresses how La Salle College, Middle Swan connects with Whadjuk Noongar elder’s past, present and future, showing the connection between the Derbarl Yerrigan River (rainbow serpent) and the College’s Yarning Circle.
The idea of transferring artwork onto a shirt means that the design is visible around the school to share, connect, engage, empower and serve others. The shirt, featuring student-created artwork inspired by First Nations stories from Middle Swan, serves as a powerful symbol of cultural appreciation and respect. It connects the school community with the Elders and spirits of the land, encouraging shared understanding and reflection.
‘Culture, Canvas, Cloth – Connecting our Community’ not only celebrates First Nations culture but also strengthens pastoral care by encouraging a united school environment where every member feels seen, heard, and valued.
Year 10 Lasallian Legends
The Lasallian Legends initiative was developed as part of the College’s revitalised Year 7 Transition Program to cultivate positive student connections and create a culture of belonging and care for Year 7s in their first year at the College. A distinctive feature of the program is the involvement of the Lasallian Legends—a group of Year 10 students who accompany the Year 7s through their first classes. These student mentors provide guidance, reassurance, and practical support, helping younger students feel welcomed and capable as they adapt to new routines and expectations.
The relationship between Year 7 students and their Year 10 mentors begins even before the school year officially commences. As part of the Lasallian Legends initiative, Year 10 students actively participate in the Year 6 Orientation Day, offering guidance and building early connections with incoming students. This relationship is further strengthened when mentors accompany Year 7s in class on their first day of high school, offering encouragement and support through their learning activities.
Throughout this process, the Year 10 mentors model Christ-like relationships—demonstrating compassion, empathy, and servant leadership—ensuring that each student feels seen, supported, and valued as they begin their secondary school journey.
The Lasallian Legends peer support model at La Salle College is a cornerstone of the Year 7 Transition Program, offering meaningful leadership opportunities for Year 10 students while enhancing the experience of incoming Year 7s.
