Wednesday 2 December 2020, the Science Technology and Robotics team (START) attended their first ever First Lego League Robotics regional competition hosted this year at Gooseberry Hill Primary School.
Our College joined ten other schools from around the Swan Valley and Perth Hills region, with students coming together to present their research projects and to showcase their robot’s ability to complete mini challenges.
Throughout the year, students have sacrificed many hours after school working extremely hard at programming, building robots and coming up with an innovative solution to real world problems. During the competition, our group of young men and women really showed the judges and other teams what La Salle students are all about – Teamwork! Even during one match, where an error meant that the robot went off in the wrong direction, our team stayed positive and helped to lift each other up!
Our College was represented by two teams on the day. Our team of Mason Moxham, Shyanne Murphy, Lili Compton Cosgun, Liam Smith and Natasha Lovelock, received positive feedback, with judges commending the intense passion demonstrated during their presentation of their innovation project. The second team, which consisted of Chase Kirby, Gabriella Griffiths, Giulia Truini and Mason Cathcart, were particularly impressive in their robot challenge where they placed 8th out of 20 teams.
This was an excellent effort for a new team and I have no doubt that come next year, both teams will be a serious contender for the top spot.
Overall, the day was full of fun and excitement and provided a valuable learning experience to all students involved.
START will be continuing in 2021 and we are always seeking new members to join!
