Science Week

20 August 2021

On Monday the 16 August we kicked off National Science Week (14-22 August) – a chance to inspire and excite our students about all things science in the world. The theme for National Science Week 2021 is Food: Different by Design, honouring both the United Nations International Year of Fruits and Vegetables and the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development. The College ran a range of fun and interactive activities across the week, some of these are detailed below.

Food themed activities at lunchtime

On Tuesday 17 August our Science teachers and staff donned their lab coats and goggles to make ice-cream. Creamy slurries of chocolate, strawberry and vanilla were squeezed into liquid nitrogen cooled vats, freezing instantly in the -210°C temperature. The frosty ice-cream was scooped into a line of eagerly outstretched cups with more 200 servings handed out by our amazing and hardworking Science team.

On Friday 20 August students had enjoyed experimenting with marshmallow catapults.

Excursion

On Wednesday 18 August some of our Year 10-12 students visited Moorditj Noongar Community Centre for a circus of hands on science experiments.

Scitech incursion

On Friday 20 August Scitech visited the College and presented a number of “Beyond the Beaker” education sessions in our Lecture Theatre.
