On Tuesday 1 August our school community celebrated NAIDOC Week 2023, which was held during the Term 2 school holidays from 2 – 9 July.
This year’s theme is For Our Elders, and we were delighted to share the morning with special guests Elder Patty Smith, John Morgridge, Neil Coyne and Family, Lilly Gogos and Nidja Noongar Boodja Koort.
Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers, and our loved ones.
Through song, dance, storytelling and a smoking ceremony, we acknowledged and celebrated the important role that Elders continue to play across every generation. Special thanks to staff member Ms Farmer, our NAIDOC Committee, student performers and our MCs Aliyah and Joshua for your important contribution to this year’s NAIDOC College Assembly.
Across the week, students and staff also participated in a range of cultural activities:
- PCG NAIDOC Quiz Competition
- Staff morning tea with kangaroo stew, damper with jam, scones with quandong jam, lemon myrtle cream, wattle seed and white chocolate muffins
- 3 v 3 Basketball Competition
- Cultural performance and face painting by Guildford Grammar indigenous students
- Incursion with Dr Ngardard Francine Riches Art of Storytelling.
