When students choose to study Music, they gain far more than the ability to play an instrument or perform on stage. They develop skills, relationships and experiences that can positively shape their lives well beyond school.
Recent Australian research by Dr Leon de Bruin (2025) highlights the important role instrumental music education can play in supporting young people’s wellbeing and resilience.
The study identified four particularly valuable aspects of music participation: positive relationships, emotional wellbeing, personal accomplishment and a sense of belonging.
At La Salle College, we see these benefits in action every day.
One of the most powerful aspects of our Music program is the community it creates. Our ensembles bring students from different year groups, backgrounds and friendship circles together, working towards a shared musical goal. Every student has a role to play, and success depends on individuals listening, contributing and supporting one another. Along the way, students develop teamwork, responsibility, leadership and lasting friendships.
These qualities are particularly evident during our annual Music Camp and Music Tours, away from the usual school environment. Younger musicians learn from their senior peers, while older students develop leadership skills through mentoring and encouragement.
Our classroom Music pathways, from the junior years through to senior Certificate II and III courses, complement these practical experiences, providing opportunities for students to develop their knowledge, collaborate and grow as musicians and individuals.
Ultimately, the value of Music education cannot be measured by performances, awards or results alone. It is found in the student who discovers confidence, the friendships formed across year levels, the satisfaction of overcoming challenges and the sense of belonging that comes from creating something together.
At La Salle, Music is not simply about developing great musicians. It is about developing confident, connected and resilient young people who find a place to belong.
